In the Cherokee language there is no word for “goodbye”. Instead we say donadagohvi, written as ᏙᎾᏓᎪᎲᎢ in the Cherokee syllabary, meaning “until we meet again” (UWMA).
ᏙᎾᏓᎪᎲᎢ (UWMA) is a symbolic piece that depicts the belief that we will one day reunite with our departed loved ones, but until then, they remain with us in spirit—even if we don’t always recognize their presence. ᏙᎾᏓᎪᎲᎢ (UWMA) reminds us that spirit hears our calls and that we will one day meet again.
Grief can greatly impact our perception of life and even change our bodies on a biological level, it can seep so deeply it becomes embedded in us and to focus on acceptance and coping becomes impossible. ᏙᎾᏓᎪᎲᎢ (UWMA) gives a glimpse into what grief has looked like for myself.

The blue jay holds significance in that it is associated with my late father, nicknamed “Jay bird” by his mother, the blue bird resembles his favorite color and her favorite bird.
